This Travel Hack Lets You See the Iconic Tulip Fields of the Netherlands Without the Crowds

Every spring, somewhere between mid-March to mid-May, the Netherlands comes alive with color as its legendary tulips burst from the ground, snapping winter’s harsh spell. The Turkish floral imports have dazzled the Dutch for centuries with their intense hues and lush blossoms. Today, the famed flowers attract tourists to Keukenhof’s tulip gardens and big festivals. In fact, there are so many you can even see them from space.

To get your floral fix without crowds or traffic, consider going straight to the source: the Dutch countryside.

The Netherlands exported nearly $88 million worth of tulip bulbs in 2022. Many of them are grown in fields just 90 minutes south of Amsterdam, on the delta island of Goeree-Overflakkee. The entire area is planted with massive tulip fields connecting several sweet, quiet towns.

Driving there during April, you’ll first notice pops of color, then vast vistas of every imaginable shade. It’s easy to stop, park, and snap images along the way — and you’ll likely have the brilliant spring spectacle all to yourself.

You can also reach the island by bus from Rotterdam’s Zuidplein station. A one-day unlimited pass costs just €15.50 (about $17). The coaches are clean, comfortable, and equipped with WiFi. Many tulip farms are within walking distance of bus stops, so keep an eye out for color and enjoy the stroll.

While locals are generally happy to welcome visitors who make their way to Goeree-Overflakkee, be sure to show respect. Resist the urge to wander through the rows for that perfect shot, so your shoes don’t introduce harmful pests. Look but don’t touch to make sure the blooms stay beautiful.  And mind the warning signs: picking or cutting the tulips is strictly prohibited and could result in costly fines.
