One of the most satisfying moments when someone compliments your shoes is then being able to brag about how comfortable they are. Finding that perfect pair of heels that blend style and comfort can sometimes feel like uncovering a hidden gem, especially when you’re looking for versatile options to travel with.

“I love this discussion because it's like the bane of our existence, trying to look nice and then you're waking up the next morning and everything hurts because you've been in heels for too long,” says podiatrist Dr. Saylee Tulpule, DPM. That’s why when you’re packing heels for travel, make sure to pick closet staples that you've already broken in, Dr. Tulpule says (more on that below), and those that will match the most amount of outfits for the occasion of your trip. The right choice will save you precious luggage real estate for shoes you won’t end up wearing, and your feet will thank you for not being in pain for days if you plan on walking a lot.

The Travel + Leisure team tested 28 pairs of heels — ranging from pumps and platforms to mules and sandals —  for comfort, versatility, and functionality for travel. We evaluated and compared each option based on fit, comfort, support, quality, and value. (Read more about our comprehensive testing process below). We tested each pair of heels for over six months to ensure each option’s reliability.

Why We Love It
  • The silhouette is a timeless classic that you can dress up or down.

What to Consider
  • The front strap can potentially feel uncomfortable for long-term wear.

Imagine stepping into the perfect pair of heels that blends comfort and style, and most importantly, doesn’t break the bank at under $50. We love that these heels come in more than two dozen color choices — ensuring an option for every occasion — and 18 sizes, including wide fits. Above all, we found that we were able to skip the dreaded breaking-in period and after six months, the heels still felt high quality. The suede material holds up well, and the three-inch chunky heel gives just enough height without torturing your feet during a night out. They’ll even help you pack less since they work for so many different events, from destination weddings and nice dinners to business trips. These shoes bring a modern yet classic feel to any outfit, recommended for anyone who wants a pair of reliable, timeless heels in their closet.

Why We Love It
  • These Nine West heels are comfortable enough for a day in the office without compromising on style.

What to Consider
  • After six months of regularly wearing these heels, we found that they are not compatible with icy or slippery surfaces and the wearer should beware of grates and other surfaces on which the thin heel may get caught.

The last thing you want to happen when you’re traveling for work is to be stuck with a pair of uncomfortable shoes for several days. That’s why we found the perfect heels that you can reliably bring on any business trip and conquer the day, and the secret is in the kitten heel (which has made a total comeback, by the way!). Despite initial concerns, the extreme pointed toe didn't compromise the true-to-size fit during testing. We found that the shoes offered comfort and mobility, with the kitten heel providing just enough arch support without pressure on the knees. We were also impressed with the quality with details like the suede leather and cushioned insole.

Why We Love It
  • We love the style of the strap curving across the instep and continuing to the heel.

What to Consider
  • These heels fit well, but prepare to break them in over your first few wears.

Not only are these shoes the most comfortable pumps on our list, but they’re also one of our favorites with a pointy toe. We love the support and comfort this pair provides, although they caused some pinching and chafing after extended wear, especially in hot weather. The classic and pretty aesthetic make it a dress shoe that won’t go out of style, and the thinner heel makes it easy to throw into a bag and travel with.

Why We Love It
  • The sturdy canvas and adjustability of the straps minimizes a breaking in or stretching period.

What to Consider
  • Even after six months of testing, these shoes pinch at the base of our toes.

Our T+L team member praised this pair of espadrilles as “the valedictorian of heels” and wished all of her shoes felt this comfortable — even her best pair of flats! We love that the canvas material and adjustable straps make this pair comfortable from the first wear, with a solid yet bouncy feel, no rubbing or chafing, and excellent arch support. The wrap-around design allows for breathability, which is crucial if you’re traveling to warmer or tropical climates such as Spain (and you'll fit right in in the birthplace of espadrilles). Plus, the rubber lining on the bottom prevents slipping.

Why We Love It
  • These shoes are easy to walk in and make you feel like you’re not even wearing heels.

What to Consider
  • If you’re deciding between sizes, we recommend sizing up.

Come for the cute and modern design, stay for the amount of comfort you’re getting with this pair. When trying this pair on for the first time, we noticed initial tightness across the toe strap, but the shoes stretched out over time, becoming more comfortable. This Franco Sarto pair is easy to walk in, is breathable, and lacks slipping issues we sometimes see with slides. We credit them with good arch support, thanks to a well-mimicked arch design and quality cushioning. The thick block heel has a modern design and feels balanced and steady. Despite some creasing, the shoes maintained their high-quality appearance throughout wear with consistent stitching. Overall, these shoes are a great way to dress any outfit up or down without the typical pain associated with heels.

Why We Love It
  • This pair of platform pumps are a definite statement shoe with an elevated, unique look compared to a traditional Mary Jane.

What to Consider
  • After six months of testing, we wish the inside of the shoe was softer and more comfortable.

You know how the old saying goes: don’t judge a shoe by its chunky platform heel. While the combined height and bulk of this pair may look intimidating, we found these pumps to be completely walkable. The shoes didn’t require a break-in period; wearing them for the first time is more about acclimating to walking in a platform heel and learning how they respond to your movements. We were happily surprised that despite the patent leather material, we experienced no blisters or chafing, even without socks on. The most notable feature that contributes to the comfort of these shoes is the thick and durable yet stretchy elastic next to each buckle on the strap, providing enough room for your foot to push forward with each step. Overall, we gave these shoes a perfect score thanks to their sturdiness, high-quality construction, genuine leather material, and seasonal versatility.

Why We Love It
  • These heels provide superior comfort, evident by details like the arch and heel support and noticeable padding on the insoles.

What to Consider
  • The highest price on this list, these pumps are a worthwhile investment that is meant to last.

The Sarah Flint Perfect Pump 85 is the most expensive recommendation on our list, but we consider it a worthy investment, justified by the handmade Italian craftsmanship, high-quality materials, and overall comfort. The gorgeous and well-constructed design is complemented by comfort-driven features like anatomical arch support and extra footbed padding. Typical for a pointy shoe style, these shoes will initially feel snug but will stretch in width with wear. At the time of publish, there are 22 styles available, so there are plenty of options for various tastes or any occasion you may be traveling for.

Why We Love It
  • This pair is worth the splurge: they feel high-end, premium, and of excellent quality.

What to Consider
  • There is not that much arch support or cushioning.

This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime pair of heels that you will buy and own forever. We deemed these shoes true to size and found that they require a brief break-in period for the initially stiff leather material that will soften with time. The leather material both looks and feels durable but soft, and the soles and hardwear look and feel hardy, too. We even tested out a white pair, and found that it didn’t scuff, scratch, or stain at all throughout wear. Another bonus: we thought these shoes were way more comfortable and supportive than similar strappy heels that we own from other high-end designers. The price tag is justified by the high-end, premium feel and excellent quality, making them a recommended investment for those seeking designer strappy heels.

Why We Love It
  • After six months of wearing to the office and out on the town, we found these to be a comfortable, high-quality pair of shoes.

What to Consider
  • The shoes had a break-in period causing initial blisters and irritation at the heels, but they became more comfortable for prolonged wear.

If you’re packing for a trip and only have room for one pair of shoes, let it be these Vivaia mid-size heels. The second we slid these shoes on, we knew they would be comfortable for all-day wear, thanks to the silky soft quilted cushioning in the footbed, the padded back heel, and the round toe design that leaves enough space for toe movement. They run true to size, accommodating wide feet without size adjustment. The materials feel high-quality, and the thick block heel adds ankle security. The shoes maintain a high-end and premium appearance, even after exposure to inclement weather and on uneven surfaces like cobblestones.

Why We Love It
  • The price is an absolute steal for shoes as comfortable, high performing, and durable as these.

What to Consider
  • These sandals don't have any exaggerated cushioning on the insoles, so someone who needs a higher level of arch support may need to take this into consideration.

There are a lot of reasons why we gave these sandals a perfect score, but the thing we love most is that they can fit in anyone’s budget. With 17 color options to choose from, this pair of shoes are great for anyone looking for comfortable, versatile, and affordable heeled sandals. Little to no break-in period was needed. The smooth, thick straps caused no discomfort during testing, even in humid weather, allowing easy and comfortable walking on various terrains for extended periods — which is perfect for exploring new places while staying fashionable.

Why We Love It
  • These wedges are exceptionally suitable for those not accustomed to wearing heels regularly.

What to Consider
  • We wish the toe area was slightly more roomy.

For those who typically avoid heels, these strappy wedges offer surprising comfort and versatility. Perfect for various occasions, the sandals impressed with their soft straps, providing a snug yet comfortable fit. We thought these had great arch support and proved easy to walk in; we felt perfectly steady even when walking across uneven ground and a variety of surfaces at a wedding, including grass, wood floors, carpet, cement, stone, gravel and polished cement.

Why We Love It
  • Put these shoes on with any outfit to instantly elevate your look with virtually no effort.

What to Consider
  • After six months of testing, we found that they still chafe, which can become uncomfortable.

This pair of mules stands out for their exceptional comfort, featuring great arch support, high-quality construction, and cushioning in the soles. They’re ideal for office wear, happy hours, commuting, and daytime activities. We especially noticed how compact they are and easy to throw into a bag for an overnight trip. It’s always a plus when shoes won’t take up too much room in your luggage. True to size, the shoes are easy to walk in and boast a thick toe strap that didn’t cause us to chafe during testing. The heel is just over 2 inches, providing stability, while the open-toe, open-back design adds breathability.

Why We Love It
  • After six months of wearing, these shoes look brand new and the quality is incredibly high, featuring padded insoles and durable, rugged outsoles with an impressive grip and traction for a loafer.

What to Consider
  • These are not the most breathable shoes.

These heeled loafers from Rothy's offer a chic and versatile option for various occasions, ranging from brunch to work and dinner. The 1.5-inch heel provides a perfect balance of wearability and style, and the shoes boast high-quality construction. Our feet and arches felt incredibly supported by the shoes during testing, with padded insoles and excellent grip and traction making them suitable for various weather conditions. As one of the higher prices on this list, these loafers are considered a splurge, but the features make them worth the investment — they’re even machine-washable. We love that you can wear these shoes for all seasons, making them an instant staple for your travels.

Other Comfortable Heels We Liked

Four additional heels we tested couldn’t quite earn a spot on our list but had some standout features that may meet the needs of some travelers.

Dolce Vita Paily Sandal: These sandals with braided straps felt immediately great on the sole and arches, requiring little-to-no break-in time. With a block heel design, they offer support throughout the day, though some additional traction on the sole and a plainer finish on the block heel could enhance the overall appeal.

Everlane The Italian Leather Day Heel: Priced for sustainability, these low-to-the-ground heels offer comfort and quality, making them suitable for various occasions. However, there is not much arch support, so your foot will get tired after a few hours of extended wear.

Inez Diana Heel: We recommend these heels for those seeking an elegant pair for special occasions or all-day wear at work, provided they can handle mid-height stilettos. The front of the shoe does make your toes look more squished than they actually are, and the suede is easily scuffed.

Margaux The Heel: These block-heeled shoes offer excellent versatility and comfort with a soft cushioned interior, making them suitable for various occasions and prolonged wear. While the shoe's weight and stiffness caused some discomfort, the overall support was appreciated.

Our Testing Process

The T+L team tested 28 pairs of heels in everyday scenarios to assess fit, comfort, support, quality, and value. We followed a comprehensive examination to evaluate each option, including overall construction, fit, and comfort level (noting any rubbing, chafing, or pinching; arch support; and potential breaking-in period). Practical scenarios included traveling, dining out, shopping, running errands, work, and more to determine comfort during activities, functionality, and overall wearability.

We tested each pair of shoes for six months to monitor comfort, durability, performance, versatility for different occasions, and wearer satisfaction over an extended period. This involves continued use in various real-world settings, as we continue to note breathability, overall comfort during extended wear, foot support, versatility, traction on different surfaces, and any signs of discomfort or wear-and-tear, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of each pair of heels’ long-term reliability. We will update these results if our findings should change.

Tips for Buying Comfortable Heels

Look for comfortable features

There are three main features you need to pay attention to when looking for the perfect pair of heels: height, toe-box shape, and the amount of stability it will provide your foot. Dr. Saylee Tulpule, DPM says that the ideal heel height is 3 inches or less because at shorter heights, there’s less pressure on the ball of your foot. “That [height is] ideal because the higher the heel, you're really putting pressure on the ball of your foot, and if you do wear a significantly high heel for long periods of time, that could mean in a given day or over of many years, you're going to end up with pain in the ball of your foot, calluses, neuromas, bunions, hammer toes, the list goes on,” she says.

Then, pay attention to the toe-box: similar to flats, you want to have a heel that has more of an almond, round, square shape. Last, heels with ankle straps will add more stability to your feet and will help keep the shoe in place.

Pay attention to material

The shoe’s material can make or break how comfortable they are going to be over time. Softer leathers (faux or otherwise), for example, are going to expand a little bit over time, so they won’t be so tight. “Whether we realize it or not, our feet do swell a little bit by the end of the day, especially if you have a job where you are standing or walking the majority of the time,” Dr. Tulpule says. “You do want to end up with material that can accommodate [that and] expand a little bit.”

Know how heels should fit

Consider the following for the perfect heel fit: toe space (enough room for your toes to wiggle), heel placement (your heel should rest comfortably against the back of the shoe), width (make sure they are not too narrow), arch support (the arch of the shoe should align with the arch of your foot), sizing (always go for the size to accommodate your larger foot), and secure straps (make sure they don’t dig into your skin).

A golden tip from our expert podiatrist Dr. Tulpule is to go shoe shopping at the end of the day because your feet are most likely to swell and slightly change size compared to the morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How can you make heels more comfortable?

Making heels more comfortable comes down to breaking them in. Most importantly, take your time to wear them gradually for longer periods of time. “Start small,” Dr. Tulpule says. “For an hour or two, go to dinner, sit down, walk here and there. The break-in period is huge, especially because you just don't know how your foot's going to tolerate the height of the heel that you chose, the shank of the heel, things like that.” Tl;dr: don’t wear a brand-new pair of shoes for an eight-hour event for the first time!

You can also try using silicone gel inserts designed specifically for heels or blister blockers if you plan on wearing heels for hours at a time or walking long distances in them.

  • Are platforms and wedges more comfortable than other types of heels?

Block heels, platforms, and wedges will be more comfortable than a stiletto because they provide a larger surface area under the foot, reducing the pressure on the ball of the foot compared to putting all of your body weight on a very thin point with traditional stilettos or high-heeled shoes. Additionally, the chunky or wedge-shaped design offers a more balanced and natural feel, making them easier to walk in for extended periods. While comfort can vary depending on individual preferences and the specific design of each shoe, many people find platforms and wedges to be a more comfortable heel option.

  • How do you pack heels in a suitcase?

Pack your heels with care to protect them from damage and to help maintain their shape. We recommend weekender bags or backpacks with designated shoe compartments, but otherwise use shoe bags to keep your shoes separate from other items to avoid any scuffing or scratches (cloth bags or pillowcases would also work just fine). Lastly, utilize any available space within your shoes for packing smaller items, like socks or accessories, to make the most of the space and protect the heel in the process.
