But these days the glamping trend, which is believed to have started in Scotland in the 16th century before being popularized by African safaris, has spread across the U.S. One glamping property in northwest Georgia is putting the state’s lush, subtropical landscape — and renowned hospitality — on the map. Dunya Camp is perched on a hilltop and surrounded by 42 acres of pine trees. The landscape, which the Cherokee people called the “enchanted land,” is made up of rolling, tree-covered hills, soft light, and hidden nooks. From the property’s hilltop vantage point, guests can look out over the wild landscape from tents that were situated for sunset viewing. Courtesy of Dunya Camp In this case, the word “tent” is a stretch: Dunya Camp’s six luxury tents are a far cry from the neon, nylon variety. Their safari-style tents all have a king-sized, four-poster bed; antique furniture; and a wood-burning stove. The decor is worldly and bohemian with playful wallpaper, opulent rugs, bold pops of color, and curios. Added perks include on-demand heat and air-conditioning and an indoor kitchen with a mini-fridge, microwave, dishwasher, kettle, and coffee machine. The private bathroom has both a deep soaking tub and a separate shower. Courtesy of Dunya Camp The Dunya Camp interiors may be cozy and luxe, but the real showstopper is found outside on the adjacent upper and lower decks. The two private decks are outfitted with amenities that most glamping properties lack, including a cedar wood hot tub and outdoor shower that entice guests to bathe with a view — or under the stars — in complete privacy. And an outdoor kitchen with a gas grill and side stove, along with a fire pit and loungers. As an upgrade, the higher-tier Sunset Grand Tents also have a private barrel sauna. The serene, peaceful property is located near Summerville, Georgia, a tiny town known for its agricultural history — first peaches, then strawberries — and the Summerville Steam train ride, which follows the historic train route between Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Summerville. Most of the camp’s offerings are nature-driven and include activities like forest bathing, walking the on-site labyrinth, dining al fresco, outdoor massage, and yoga classes in the forest. On adventures off-property, guests can explore the waterfall-laden Little River Canyon National Preserve, the James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park, and Paradise Garden, the former home and workplace of Baptist minister and folk artist Howard Finster. The Dunya Camp property is roughly 90 minutes northwest of Atlanta and an hour south of Chattanooga. To maintain supreme peace and quiet, Dunya Camp has a strict no children under 12 and a no pets policy.
