While a charming hotel room in a quaint village in the mountains certainly makes for a charming and romantic getaway, why not turn it up a notch and just rent a whole castle?

In Cornwall, England you can do just that, thanks to the United Kingdom’s National Trust, which owns a castle you can actually rent.

Doyden Castle, located near Port Quin, about 200 miles southwest of London, is an early 19th-century castle that’s been transformed into a charming vacation destination. Originally built as a secret spot for drinking and gambling, according to The Daily Mail, the property, plus 40 acres of land, was left to the National Trust in 1956. At that time, it was transformed into a barebones holiday rental with no bathroom and no electricity.

Fast forward to the digital age (can you imagine no electricity?) and the castle has been completely renovated and brought into the (mostly) 21st century. The castle now has modern amenities like dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator and freezer, washer and dryer, TV and DVD player. But like a true romantic retreat, Wi-Fi and a telephone have been left out so you can spend more quality time with your significant other. And yes, they did add a bathroom.

“It’s definitely somewhere people go for an escape,” Tracey Mortimore from the National Trust told The Daily Mail.

An escape, yes. But who would want to leave the charming castle that feels quintessentially British with mix-matched patterns, a charming table under tall windows overlooking the sea, and a brick fireplace to cuddle up near on a chilly night.

The castle costs about $622 to rent for two nights off season, but can go up to over $2100 for a week during the peak season. If those rates sound high, don’t fret, the money goes back into the Trust to help with conservation of the castle and other properties around the country.

If you want to stay in this fairy-tale accommodation, you'll have to plan ahead. The castle is almost completely booked until January of next year.
