The ART Hotel Denver

It used to be that as far as tourism was concerned, Denver was simply an easy launchpad to other parts of Colorado. Many travelers would fly into the airport in town then immediately move onto more bucolic, mountainous retreats in destinations like Vail, Aspen, and Telluride. But that is changing. More and more visitors to Colorado are spending time in its capital city, where they’re discovering Denver’s award-winning restaurants, world-class art, and cult-favorite beers and whiskies.

As such, the hospitality scene is expanding and improving, with new hotels regularly opening all over the urban sprawl. While fantastic big-box luxury hotels certainly have a presence in Denver, the city’s hotel landscape is actually better known for charming boutique properties, which better reflect its more casual lifestyle. But as Denver welcomes more and more hotels, visitors will certainly find something to suit their travel style, whether that’s a grand luxury property or a design-forward bolthole with a locally beloved restaurant.

Ready to discover the Mile High City? Here are our picks for the 12 best hotels in Denver based on editor-loved favorites and winners from our World’s Best Awards and It List.

Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek

Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek

What We Like
  • The list of on-site amenities is extensive.

What to Consider
  • There is no spa.

154 stylish, modern rooms offer guests a lovely stay at this chic boutique hotel in the heart of Cherry Creek, Denver’s most affluent neighborhood. That said, the laundry list of amenities Halcyon provides is meant to inspire exploration outside the room and beyond the property. One of my favorite perks is the Halcyon Wellness Passport, which allows guests access to a handful of fitness studios in the neighborhood. There’s also the Gear Garage, a room full of bikes, tennis racquets, scooters, sleds, cameras, and more to make your visit to Denver all the more exciting. The lobby-level kitchen counter is also a popular amenity, where you can pick up fruit and muffins in the morning, coffee throughout the day, and wine in the afternoon. And if that’s not enough, Halcyon has a rooftop pool deck (with hot tubs), too.

The Details:

The Ramble

Guest room in The Ramble

The Ramble

Also available to book at Expedia.com

What We Like
  • The moody, sexy interiors are unique in Denver.

What to Consider
  • There aren’t a lot of amenities – there is no pool and the gym is on the small side.

Designed to look like a sumptuous Parisian salon, The Ramble (a winner in our 2023 World’s Best Awards) delivers a heightened interior experience that you simply won’t find elsewhere in Denver. Think: huge crystal chandeliers, mix-and-match textiles in the bedrooms, and textured surfaces from velvet to leather. The cocktail maestros at Death & Co. are partners on the project, too, so the lobby bar serves some of the best drinks in town, making this hotel a worthwhile destination for more than just its beautiful bedrooms. And if you want to venture out, The Ramble is within walking distance of some of the coolest restaurants and shops in the hip RiNo Arts District.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: RiNo Art District
  • Distance From Airport: 26 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Union Station, Coors Field,  Larimer Square, The Source, Zeppelin Station, Mission Ballroom
  • Accessibility: Some accessibility features include wide guest room doorways, ADA-accessible rooms, braille signage throughout, and more.
  • Rates: From $309 per night
  • Parking: $35 per night for valet parking
  • Pet Policy: The Ramble Hotel is not pet friendly, however under the ADA, service animals are welcome.

The Maven

Lobby of The Maven

The Maven

Also available to book at Expedia.com

What We Like
  • The hotel has a great lobby vibe thanks to the adjacent cocktail bar, a retail shop, and a snack bar in a retrofitted airstream.

What to Consider
  • The hotel can get a bit loud, which may not be ideal if you're looking for a more serene stay.

The Maven, which opened in the bustling Dairy Block in 2017, has some of the brightest hotel rooms around thanks to loft-style units with floor-to-ceiling windows. The 172 rooms come in a number of categories, from standard doubles to larger themed suites to rooms with bunk beds, meaning the hotel can easily accommodate different traveler styles. A 2023 World’s Best Awards winner, the design of The Maven is also quite eye-catching: the curators at Denver’s NINE dot ARTS selected 700 different pieces to brighten up every corner of the property.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: LoDo
  • Distance From Airport: 22 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: The Dairy Block, Denver Art Museum, Coors Field, Ball Arena, Denver Aquarium, Denver Union Station
  • Accessibility: The Maven offers full ADA accessibility, including in rooms with one-king or two-queen configurations.
  • Rates: From $299 per night
  • Resort Fee: $25 per-night fee; covers Wi-Fi; one house margarita, glass of wine or craft beer per person from 4 to 7 p.m. daily; and one complimentary Huckleberry drip coffee daily until noon. • Parking: $53 per night for valet
  • Pet Policy: $50 per night for dogs up to 60 pounds, includes in-room dog bowl and bed.

Clayton Members Club & Hotel

Guest room at Clayton Members Club

Jimena Peck / Clayton Hotel & Members Club

Also available to book at Expedia.com

What We Like
  • The hotel offers countless amenities, from complimentary fitness classes to a co-working space to a rooftop restaurant.

What to Consider
  • The public spaces are shared with the members club so expect them to be crowded at times.

It’s hard to find a boutique hotel in Denver with as many guest amenities as the Clayton, which opened in the affluent Cherry Creek neighborhood in 2021. The 63-room property, the first members club-hotel hybrid in the city, comes with multiple restaurants (including one in the members club and a fabulous rooftop pizza parlor that regularly hosts events), a gym with a ton of equipment, and a pool.

Overnight guests are invited to participate in events as well as yoga and fitness classes that are typically organized for members. Add the beautifully designed interiors by AvroKO, and it’s no wonder the Clayton was named among our favorite new hotels on our 2022 It List and was voted by T+L readers as one of the best Denver hotels in 2023.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: Cherry Creek North
  • Distance From Airport: 22 Miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Cherry Creek North Shopping District, Denver Botanic Gardens, Cheesman Park
  • Accessibility: There’s an accessible registration desk pathway near the lobby, service animals are welcome, elevators, accessible guest rooms with 32″ wide doorways, accessible route from public entrance to accessible guest rooms. In the guestrooms, deadbolt locks are lowered, door night guards lowered, doors with lever handles, electrical outlets lowered, hearing accessible rooms and/or kits, accessible vanities, viewports lowered, wireless charging pad at the nightstand. • Pet policy: Clayton welcomes up to two pets per guest room, allowed in the guest room and lobby level (not on club levels). A $75 fee per stay applies and includes a dog bed, bowl and treats in the room upon arrival.

The Curtis Denver – a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel

Guest room in The Curtis Denver

The Curtis

Also available to book at Trip Advisor

What We Like
  • The hotel is within walking distance of Union Station, Larimer Square, and other downtown attractions.

What to Consider
  • The colorful, eccentric decor may not be for everyone.

Opened in 2007, The Curtis has developed a reputation for its whimsical interior decor. 336 guest rooms are spread across 13 themed floors, from the Superhero Floor to the Fun & Games Floor to the Perfect Pair Floor. These themes are typically brought to life by colorful furnishings and eye-catching artworks created by both Colorado and international artists. The Curtis, a winner in our 2022 World’s Best Awards, is as Instagrammable as a hotel comes.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: Downtown Denver
  • Distance From Airport: 23 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Downtown Denver, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Coors Field, Union Station, The Dairy Block, Museum of Contemporary Art

The Oxford

Lobby of The Oxford

The Oxford Hotel

Also available to book at Expedia.com

What We Like
  • The hotel’s history is unmatched: it was first built in 1891 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

What to Consider
  • The old-school interiors may not be to everyone’s tastes.

Located in the city’s very walkable LoDo district, The Oxford, a 2023 World’s Best Awards winner, offers both history and charm. At check-in, expect to be handed an actual key to get into one of its 80 rooms, which are outfitted with a mix of modern amenities (like great mattresses and linens) and throwback decor (think: antique wood headboards and clawfoot tubs). There are also some fantastic amenities, namely the Oxford Club Fitness Center and the Cruise Room, Denver’s very first cocktail lounge which opened the day after Prohibition was overturned.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: LoDo
  • Distance From Airport: 22 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Denver Union Station, Denver Art Museum, Coors Field, Ball Arena, History Colorado
  • Accessibility: ADA-accessible rooms

  • Parking: $58 per night for valet
  • Pet Policy: $50 per night for dogs

The Rally

Kitchenette in The Rally Hotel

The Rally Hotel

Also available to book at Expedia.com

What We Like
  • For traveling baseball enthusiasts, the hotel is located right next to Coors Field.

What to Consider
  • It’s a large hotel, which may be a consideration for travelers looking for something quieter and more intimate.

One of the anchor properties of the McGregor Square development adjacent to Coors Field (where the Colorado Rockies play), The Rally offers one of the most unique hotel locations in the city. In fact, of the 182 rooms, you’ll want to ask for one on a higher floor where the windows peek directly into the stadium. Though there is a subtle baseball theme running through the hotel (like a color scheme that nods to the hometown team), The Rally is actually much more rooted in Americana rather than sports. The on-site restaurant, The Original, feels like a modernized diner serving up chicken pot pies and deviled eggs. The rooftop gym and plunge pool are some of the best you’ll find in Denver. And as a guest of the hotel, you’re treated to lots of discounts to neighboring businesses in McGregor Square, too.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: The Rally Hotel is located in the Mile High City’s Lower Downtown (LoDo) neighborhood and just off McGregor Square, Denver’s popular entertainment mecca.
  • Distance From Airport: The Denver International Airport is about a 25-minute drive from The Rally (19.8 miles).
  • Nearby Attractions: Coors Field, Dairy Block, National Ballpark Museum, Denver Union Station, Meow Wolf Convergence Station, The Denver Zoo
  • Accessibility: There are eight accessible rooms available; more details can be found here.
  • Rates: From $289 per night
  • Resort Fee: $25 fee; includes a check-in pour of The Rally’s Mile High Jinks beers; access to the Skybridge Rooftop Deck & Plunge Pool; courtesy car to destinations within two miles; and more.
  • Parking: Valet for $54.00 per car per day
  • Pet Policy: The Rally is dog-friendly and offers dog beds, bowls and treats. There is a pet fee of $50 per stay.

Catbird

Also available to book at Expedia.com

What We Like
  • The rooms (even the entry-level studios) are generously sized.

What to Consider
  • There isn’t much going on in this pocket of the RiNo Arts District.

Modernly designed, spacious rooms and countless on-site amenities make this extended-stay hotel the best lodging option for digital nomads. Loft-style rooms (which range from studios to multi-bedroom units) are cleverly designed to maximize space. For example, storage and desks can often be tucked under the loft so you can use that newly vacated space for simple workouts. Laundry facilities and water stations on every floor cover your basic needs, but more next-level perks include hot tubs on the rooftop; a well-equipped gym; a playroom stuffed with bikes, Vespas, cooking appliances, and GoPros; and a seasonal rooftop bar and restaurant.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: RiNo Art District
  • Distance From Airport: 20 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Mission Ballroom, Zeppelin Station, Denver Central Market
  • Accessibility: There are 10 ADA-compliant rooms. See more details here.
  • Rates: From  $149 per night
  • Resort Fee: $30 per night; covers one grab 'n' go breakfast entrée per day at the Catbird Kitchen; coffee and tea in the lobby; access to the rooftop hot tub; Wi-Fi; access to laundry; fitness center; and playroom equipment (bikes, scooters).
  • Parking: $52 per night for valet parking, $34 for covered self-parking, and street parking is available in the neighborhood
  • Pet Policy: Catbird charges a one-time $75 pet fee for the duration of stay. And 10 percent of fee proceeds are donated to MaxFund Animal Adoption Center — a local no-kill animal shelter and adoption center. Upon arrival, dogs receive a dog bed, bowl, a Catbird squeaky toy, and treats.

Thompson Denver, by Hyatt

Lounge area in The Thompson

The Thompson Denver

Also available to book at Expedia.com

What We Like
  • The hotel has one of the liveliest social calendars in Denver’s hotel scene.

What to Consider
  • It’s a buzzy, modern hotel, which may not appeal to those looking for something more low-key and traditional.

New York City design firm Parts & Labor dreamt up the sexy, mid-century-modern style of the Thompson’s 216 rooms and suites, which opened in 2022. The sleek but youthful aesthetic is one of the most striking in Denver, and thus, the property typically attracts young professionals who want all the perks of a global hospitality chain plus the cool factor that Thompson provides with its buzzing bars and restaurants. And for the latter, they have their pick of three distinct venues: Chez Maggy, Ludo Lefebvre’s first restaurant outside Los Angeles, Bar M, and Reynard Social, which regularly hosts themed dance parties throughout the week.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: LoDo
  • Distance From Airport: 25 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Union Station, Denver Art Museum, Dairy Block, Aquarium Denver, Meow Wolf
  • Rates: From $309 per night
  • Resort Fee: $25.27 fee; covers long-distance and domestic calls; Wi-Fi; bubbles at check-in; package delivery to your room for up to five packages; refillable bottled water upon check-in; in-house shoe shining; and a daily sweet treat from Duel Coffee.
  • Parking: Valet parking is $59 per day
  • Pet Policy: Up to two dogs (of any size) at no additional charge

The ART Hotel Denver, Curio Collection by Hilton

Exterior of The ART Hotel Denver, Curio Collection by Hilton

The ART Hotel Denver

Also available to book at Expedia.com

What We Like
  • The hotel has recently completed a multi-million-dollar refresh.

What to Consider
  • Though located right by the Denver Art Museum and the Clyfford Still Museum, there’s little else within easy walking distance of the hotel.

One of Denver’s first art-obsessed hotels and a 2021 World’s Best Awards winner, The Art Hotel is full of fantastic pieces (by the likes of Leo Villareal and Ed Ruscha) selected by Dianne Vanderlip, former curator of modern and contemporary art at the Denver Art Museum. The collection creates a beautiful mosaic competitive with the best museums in the city.

The 165 rooms are fairly minimal in style, but they’re all brightened by prints and lithographs that reinforce the property’s artsy bonafides. The bathrooms are pretty great, too, with plenty of marble surfaces and high-quality amenities (that you’re free to take home) by Lather.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: Denver’s Golden Triangle Museum District
  • Distance From Airport: 28 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Denver Art Museum, Coors Field, Ball Arena, Empower Field at Mile High, Clyfford Still Museum
  • Accessibility: Available features include accessible elevators, accessible meeting rooms, accessible registration desk, accessible route from the hotel’s public entrance to at least one restaurant, automatic opening of bedroom door from the inside, grab bars in bathroom and much more. Find more of the hotel’s accessibility features here.
  • Rates: From $399 per night
  • Resort Fee:  The daily amenity fee of $20 covers WiFi; self-serve candy station; $20 daily credit per room to Fire Restaurant & Lounge; complimentary ride in the house car within two-mile radius (though some destinations may be excluded).
  • Parking: Valet parking for $54 per night
  • Pet Policy: There is a $50 pet fee per animal (maximum weight 80 pounds). There is a limit of two dogs per room. Dogs must be on a leash in all common areas of the hotel and are not permitted in any of the hotel bars or restaurants (with the exception of service dogs). Dogs must be registered at the front desk upon arrival to avoid a $250 fee.

Four Seasons Hotel Denver

Courtyard at Four Seasons Denver

Four Seasons Resorts

Also available to book at Expedia.com

What We Like
  • This is one of the few true five-star luxury hotels in town.

What to Consider
  • It is one of the priciest hotels in Denver.

The 260 rooms and suites of this hotel are located in one of the tallest buildings in Denver. The higher you go, the better the views get. Interiors are sleek and modern — designed to make you feel as if you’re staying in a high-end residence in the heart of the city’s downtown. And the marble bathrooms that come in every guest room are spacious and luxurious. Other perks — like the stunning spa, access to a house car, and kids amenities including a gift upon arrival — elevate your stay.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: Downtown Denver
  • Distance From Airport: 25 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Larimer Square, Denver Art Museum, Meow Wolf, Union Station
  • Rates: From $595 per night
  • Parking: Valet parking is $65 per night
  • Pet Policy:  No additional fees but guests need to register their dogs at check-in

Life House Lower Highlands

Guest room at Life House Lower Highlands

Matt Kisiday / Life House Lower Highlands

Also available to book at Expedia.com

What We Like
  • The bunk bed rooms are great for groups.

What to Consider
  • Not everyone will love the unique interior design choices.

With in-room amenities like Le Labo bath products, Marshall speakers, and wellness programming you can stream off the TV,  it’s no wonder that Life House Lower Highlands made the It List in 2021. But on top of the primo guest room experience, the hotel also features one of the more photogenic interior design schemes in Denver thanks to decor that combines the romance of the Victorian-era with the adventurousness of the Gold Rush. Room categories range from six-bunk units (perfect for families and friend groups) to larger suites. Wildflower, the on-property restaurant serving a global menu bolstered by farm-fresh ingredients, has been a hit since opening in 2020; it’s easily one of the best hotel restaurants in the city.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: Highlands
  • Distance From Airport: 23 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Coors Field, Ball Arena, RiNo Arts District, Denver Zoo
  • Accessibility: The hotel is wheelchair accessible
  • Rates: From $119 per night
  • Resort Fee: 5 percent of your stay
  • Parking: Street parking only
  • Pet Policy: No pets

Know Before You Go

Denver sits at a very high altitude

If you’re visiting the Mile High City from destinations at much lower altitudes, the difference may impact you physically in different ways. But the most important thing is to allow your body to slowly acclimate to the altitude, so be sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. You should also ease into more demanding physical activity (like exercise or hiking) as the decrease in air pressure means you won't be getting as much oxygen.

Pack layers

Denver has year-round mild temperatures and dry desert conditions. The lack of humidity helps, but the weather can change quickly and you’ll want to be prepared. You’ll find locals wearing Patagonia’s lightweight quilted jackets everywhere, from breweries and restaurants to the hiking trails.

Moisturize and wear sunscreen

Because of Denver’s altitude and dryness, you need to moisturize more frequently than you think. And on warm sunny days, the city’s elevation will make the sun feel fiercer on your skin so don’t forget to regularly apply (and re-apply) sunscreen and wear a hat for added coverage.

Mind the resort fee

Most hotels in Denver include a resort fee that covers additional amenities. (This fee might be called different things in different hotels.) Some properties have very basic perks attached to this fee, like the inclusion of Wi-Fi or the water housekeeping leaves in your room. At other hotels, you may receive more fabulous add-ons such as on-site happy hour or discounts at their restaurants. This fee typically starts from $20 a night and isn’t included in the booking rate. There’s no getting out of these fees, so prior to booking, make sure you ask the hotel what you will get out of it.

How We Chose These Hotels

Chadner Navarro is a long-time travel writer who recently spent 10 months living in Denver. During that time, he was able to check out many of the city’s top hotels. The properties on this list were selected based on his personal experience as well as feedback from other T+L editors and readers. Many of the included hotels have also been voted by readers into T+L’s annual World’s Best Awards and It List. The final lineup also aligns with T+L's Hotel Values.
